Welcome to Virgo Season

Embracing the organized, analytical and well-being energy of Virgo season.

As summer starts to wind down, we welcome in Virgo season. This year, starting on August 22 and running until September 22, Virgo is the mutable earth sign of the zodiac that transitions us from the throes of summer into the beginning stages of autumn.

During this time, our routines start to change as summer activities begin to wind down and schools go back in session. Summer blooms start to show their age as petals dry and seed pods take shape, and we grasp onto the last nights of summer bonfires and beach days, aware that soon the air will carry a chill and the colors will change. It's a time of quiet transition, where the vibrant fiery energy of summer begins to yield to the cooler, more subdued earth tones and energy of autumn.

Virgo, symbolized by the maiden virgin, offers us an opportunity to reflect on our day-to-day routines and analyze areas of our lives that often operate on autopilot—our health, work, and service to others. The season encourages us to get organized, refine our schedules, and bring a sense of order to our lives. The excitement many people feel about buying back-to-school supplies makes perfect sense in this context, as Virgo's energy aligns with preparation and meticulousness. While I’ve been out of school for many years, I still find myself wanting to browse the back-to-school sections for new office supplies or think about ways to give my office a refresh.

On the farm, this time of year starts the reflection and planning process for next season. Already I’ve honed the list of what I will and won’t grow next year, what worked and what didn’t, and what felt good and what didn’t as I continue down this flower path. I’ve walked through the rows tagging the flower heads that I want to save seeds from and I’ve slowly started to trim away plants who have had their time this season. While nothing needs to be finalized just yet, especially given there are still some weeks left in this growing season, I enjoy the encouragement to start thinking about how I can do things differently.

If you’re curious on how you can embrace the energy of Virgo season, here are a few simple ideas to get you started:

  • Add a new practice to your weekly schedule to prioritize your health and well-being. This could be a new movement routine, trying out something different in your eating habits, or incorporating self-care practices that leave you feeling grounded (remember, Virgo is one of our earth signs!). Virgo season is ideal for focusing on wellness and establishing habits that support your overall health and well-being. Once you implement a new practice or habit, what do you notice? How has it made a difference in your day, week or the season of life you’re in?

  • Embrace the spirit of service and think about ways to make a positive impact in the life of another. Acts of service, whether they be through giving your time, monetary contributions, or other forms of help, align beautifully with the Virgo ethos. Consider volunteering, helping a neighbor, or simply performing random acts of kindness. This season encourages us to look beyond ourselves and contribute to the well-being of others. What do you notice about how you feel when you contribute in this way?

  • Declutter and organize your living and work spaces. Virgo’s meticulous nature can inspire you to tidy up your surroundings. Clearing out unnecessary items and organizing your environment can bring a sense of clarity and peace, making it easier to focus on what truly matters. When you’re finished, take a few moments to reflect on how organizing your space impacted your mental clarity and productivity. What did you notice?

  • Reflect on your daily routines and find ways to optimize them. Take some time to evaluate how you spend your days and identify areas for “improvement”. This might mean creating more efficient workflows for yourself, finding ways to balance your responsibilities, or ensuring you have time for rest and relaxation. Improvement doesn’t always have to mean doing something “better”, but rather is there a way to do something differently so that it aligns more with your ideal day, career, life, etc. When you spend time doing so, what do you notice? What insights have you gained about your routines and any changes you implemented?

  • Spend time in nature. This is true for any season, but especially as Virgo is the mutable earth sign of the zodiac. Spend time outside in nature and look for the ways that the season is starting to transition. Do you notice the days getting shorter? Or perhaps your own summer flowers starting to wither away? What transitions are you noticing around you and what transitions are you looking to make in your own life?

When you take time to pay attention and tune into the essence of Virgo season, you can harness its practical and nurturing energy to enhance your life. Whether through improving your health, serving others, or organizing your environment, this time of year offers a unique opportunity to bring a sense of order and mindfulness to your daily activities. Virgo’s influence encourages us to strive for our best selves, fostering growth and well-being as we transition from the lively and fiery days of summer to the calm and grounded days of autumn.

As the season progresses, take time to think about the themes and symbolism mentioned here and notice any changes in how you felt or the connections you made with the grounding energy of Virgo.

Enjoy Virgo season, friends!
